<description>Jaded!!??!! Never say it. There is just that moment when you've been a bridesmaid so many times you start thinking you're defective and will never marry. (This is not a metaphor I'm using accidentally.)

It is a total blast to be a finalist, especially for a book, especially when your book hasn't gotten any response yet - it puts an end to that dreadful period when you can't figure out if everyone hates it or not.

One of my other favorite things is that I've gotten quite a few notes from administrators and interns to say that they really like my ms., even when it hasn't won, and that makes me feel as though I'm doing my job - writing things that are meaningful to ordinary people.

Tell us more about Anhinga Press - why do you like them so much? I don't know anything about them.

<description>Lynette!! I am SO glad to hear from you! And cooking school and massage school and Chiang Mai! I too am of the don't-read-up-on-where-you're-going school of travel, and where I was going was Laos. I had a wonderful time, but only for three weeks, and it sounds like you've been in Thailand for three months or more? You are hereby invited to come to visit when you (if you ever) get back to the States and teach me how to make sticky rice and mango. We do not have bedbugs in Nevada City.

Are you writing? Poems, journal entries, letters? Do you miss the North Pole?

Let me know if the Thai curries have those little round eggplants in them, about the size of a cherry tomato. And tell us what the deal is with bird flu - are the Thai people worried about it?

Do people turn their toes away from you when you're standing near them? I was there in 1989, before and after Laos, and people were still adamant about not pointing their toes at us: it is considered so rude. In elevators, all the toes would shift to the side when we got in.

I hope you're having a blast - it sounds like it, weird dogs and all. Write again to let us know about your adventures.

<description>Lisa! I have always thought foxes were chickens, your son has got it. And what an incredible compliment to have someone use your words as a tattoo! I've seen a tattoo of part of Mary Oliver's Wild Geese, but not anything else. And on her wrist where she can see it all the time! Way, way cool.

xo

PS thank you for the absence of poetic revelations about gastroenteritis</description>

<description>It's up in Washington State: the Port Townsend Blues and Heritage Festival in early August: http://efolkmusic.org/ResourcesDir/FestivalDisplay.asp?ID=434

Thank you for reminding us that she said writing poetry is hard. I keep wondering why I don't get to it, day after day, and maybe that's why. I guess I'd better start woodshedding.

<description>After Kim's reading I was most struck by how hard she works. She says most people don't write poetry because it's hard, so if you want to do it, put your head down and work. Read, write and persist. That was pretty simple and clear. I also loved how she shared the story about reading a poem she had written over and over to her ailing mother, because her mother asked her to. The many functions of poetry. Poetry as healing, as communication, as connection. I also loved that she played her harmonica, and how open she was about how uncomfortable she was playing music in front of people, and yet she did it anyway. This is how you learn, and how you work. You do it. And you take on bigger challenges. She's going to be the Blues Poet at a big Blues Festival, can't remember which one. And so she's been woodshedding a lot to prepare. I just love that word, woodshedding.

Great spirit and great inspiration.

<description>That's a great magazine, Lisa - I've heard you mention it before but not looked at it. Perfect venue for the poem, and wonderful poem. They don't show any submission guidelines on the website - are they open to new contributors? And does one need to be outside the US to submit? One of my Boot Camp participants is writing some good poems about the dreadful governing of the US, very metaphoric, but she's in L.A.

Next Thanksgiving I will send you creamed onions.

<description>I think that's a great idea, Lynette - if you're not basking on Thai beaches (I think you've left the Pole and are basking on some beach somewhere), see if you can hook him up with the blog.
